Job Description
The V&A is committed to creating a world class visitor and learning experience across all V&A sites and collections while looking to diversify and increase private and commercial funding sources. V&A Membership is a key facilitator in achieving these aims and therefore the growth and stewardship of Membership is vital to the Museum’s success. Presently, the V&A has approximately 62,000 Memberships, who connect and engage with the Museum in a variety of ways.
The purpose and aims of the Membership Events programme are to provide an entertaining, interesting and informative experience that allows Members to engage with the Museum onsite and online, across multiple venues, to increase their loyalty to the V&A, contributing to Membership retention.
The Senior Membership Officer will work across the Membership Events programme, with primary responsibility the programming and delivery of unique Members-only events both on site and online; the stewardship of Membership Event volunteers, and contributing to the running of evening talks, including deputising for the Membership Event Manager as needed. This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and detail-oriented individual to shape the programme, at a time of museum-wide focus on growth in the Membership base, both across the UK and internationally, as the museum expands its number of venues and diversifies its audiences.
Responsibilities
- Under supervision of the Events Manager, take responsibility for the research, planning and delivery of a series of unique Members-only events and tours, onsite and online, especially to reintroduce a range of events that appeal to a growing and diverse audience, looking across multiple venues.
- Programme and deliver exhibition-related Members’ Only curator talks, preview days, and other out of hours access to exhibitions as required.
- With support of Head of Membership, deputise for Membership Events Manager to run evening talks when appropriate or if Membership Events Manager is away
- Manage the staffing allocation of your programmes, which may include recruiting and booking zero hours or contract workers to deliver projects and events and working with internal teams including catering, AV, and security.
- Build and grow a diverse network of contacts both within the museum (e.g., curatorial, conservation, catering) and externally to develop event suggestions and opportunities, and help publicise
- Work with the rest of the events team to set up events and associated collateral (maps, itineraries, joining emails, etc.) on V&A ticket sales systems, including Galaxy, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, email system, and the V&A website, and process online bookings as needed.
- Work in conjunction with the Director’s Circle and Young Patrons Managers to provide opportunities for higher level supporters and donors to engage with the events programme.
- To assist at evening or daytime talks with external speakers.
- To supply relevant copy and images to the wider Membership Team or other Museum colleagues for a variety of media, including (but not limited to) the V&A Magazine, email marketing and the V&A website and social media outlets.
- Together with the Events Assistant to look after the Volunteer Events Representatives, ensuring they are happy, productive and kept up-to-date, and supervise the process of event allocation between reps, as coordinated by the Events Assistant.
- To contribute to day-to-day customer service, working with the Events Assistant to manage the events inbox and answer the events phone line when in the office.
- General assistance, where required, with the work of the Membership Office as well as the wider Development team.
- Keeping the Development team (including senior management) up-to-date on the events program.
- Attendance at appropriate events, on site and online, outside normal working hours.
- To work within the routines of the department, for instance, following procedures for IT help requests, record keeping and data protection.
Job Requirements
Job Specific
Proven experience curating a diverse programme of engaging events with a creative approach to event ideas, preferably within a membership scheme.
An understanding of V&A Members and Membership programme, along with interest and commitment to the work of the Victoria and Albert Museum, across its complete family of sites
Meticulous attention to detail and strong organisational skills
A very flexible attitude to hours – the position involves late nights assisting with events and potentially early mornings and/or some weekend working
Responsive and confident with an ability to keep calm under pressure.
Core Skills
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and numerical ability to perform a range of calculations
Experience of communicating clearly, with the ability to adapt your communication style for different groups
The ability to use MS Office and other relevant IT systems as appropriate for the role.
Proven ability to manage a high workload and multiple priorities whilst meeting deadlines, as part of a small team.
